Easy Food Tips

How about four easy food tips this Friday morning?

Wrap celery in plastic wrap when putting in the refrigerator and it will keep for weeks. The less air, the longer the celery lasts.

For a variation, take a head of Romaine lettuce, dry it after rinsing, and then put in a plastic bag. Here comes the cool part. Grab a straw and stick it in the bag and twirl the top of the bag. Suck out all the air, quickly pull out the straw, and then twist the bag tight before sealing with a twisty tie.

You'll be amazed at how long celery and Romaine lettuce will remain fresh using the above technique.

Here's another food tip: brush some beaten egg white over pie crust before baking to yield a beautiful glossy finish.

And one more... Place a slice of apple in hardened brown sugar to soften it.

Let's finish with a food tip, shall we? :)

When boiling corn on the cob, add a pinch of sugar to help bring out the corn's natural sweetness.

  1. WOW! Great tip about celery I never knew. I eat it everyday and I always did wonder how to keep it from going brown.
Also the corn, niice! I don't eat corn but I'll be sure to pass that juicy tip along.

  2. Another way to keep celery lasting longer is to wrap it in tin foil. It stays crunchy longer.

  3. One more thing you can do to keep lettuce even longer is throw a folded paper towel in the bag before you suck the air out. Then just replace it every time you open the bag!

  4. When arriving home from the store, naturally, the very first thing I do is wash my hands.

Even if my sink looks clean, I spray it well with a glass cleaner, then rinse it well. Then I fill the sink with cold water with just a few drops of detergent added to it. No need to have a bunch of suds.

To this water I add all of my fresh foods, including bananas. Not only does this keep gnats from “growing” in your kitchen, it removes pesticides, germs from handlers, and dirt from your fruit and veggies.

After the veggies and fruits are removed from the soapy water and rinsed, I add the bags that the fruits and veggies were brought home in from the store. They are washed and rinsed well then hung aside to drain. Sometimes it is necessary to step outside and shake them vigorously to rid them of excess water.

The tomatoes, oranges, peaches and bananas, etc., are always left in a dish (with a paper towel in the bottom) on the countertop. Other fruits are treated as the veggies, below.

For the celery and lettuce, I wrap a paper towel loosely around the butt end of the head, put back into their clean and drained plastic bag, then tie the ends closed and refrigerate immediately in the veggie drawer of the fridge. Washing first, leaving the produce slightly damp, then secure in their own bags prolongs their “shelf-life” greatly. It is seldom necessary to toss browned or wilted produce if treated this way.

Baby carrots are treated the same way. I always add a folded paper towel to the bag.

Grapes do not hang around long enough to worry about shelf life, but they are treated the same way.

  5. Another way to keep celery fresh for 3 weeks is to wash it and cut off the ends. Take a container that is the length of the stalks, place a damp paper towel in the bottom, add the celery and another damp paper towel on top and put the lid on it and place it in the fridge. Keeps fresh for 3 weeks.

  10. I wish people would stop boiling corn. Just put an inch of water in the pot add a dash of honey and let it steam for 8-10 minutes. Much quicker and better than letting the corn sog in boiling water.

  11. For celery, romaine or any other "tall" fresh veggie, I make a soda bottle crisper that works great. Cut the top off two 2 liter soda bottles. Stand your veggie in one. The little hump in the bottom keeps the bottom of the veggie drained and fresh. Cut a slit up the side of the other bottle so you can squeeze it together a bit then slide it down over the top of your veggie making sure the top edge of it goes inside the other bottle. Your veggies will keep for literally weeks.
